The History of Mt. Zion A.R.P.

Mt Zion A.R.P. is a church with a long history in the Troy, Mo. area and dates back to the early settlement of the state. The beginnings of the church stretch back to 1818 when a group of people came to Missouri from the Carolinas and other states back east by way of Kentucky. Some of the families came from the Old Brick Church near Winnsboro, SC. Others came from Newberry County, SC. and still others from Maryland's eastern shores. These people had settled in what became Lincoln County near the old communities of Auburn and Snow Hill. (Snow Hill was named for a town in Maryland where some of the settlers had once lived.) Mt. Zion was organized as an Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in 1834. When it was organized the church was known as the Auburn Church because the first building was near Auburn. The charter elders were Alexander Reid, Sr., James Alexander, Sr., and James Finley. The first deacons were James Shannon, James Alexander, and Richard Gladney. On July 1, 1843 the church's name became Mt. Zion which has come down to this day. The first building was a frame structure built in 1843 on the property of James Finley. Finley supplied the lumber for the building and the pews. The pews and the pulpit were made of Missouri walnut.

A brick building was erected in 1854. The bricks were made from clay on the church property and fired on the spot. The building was a one-room structure with two front doors. The congregation was separated by gender until the twentieth century and thus the two front doors. This building served the congregation until 1965. It has since been torn down and marked by a monument. The site of the old brick church ia about 1 one-quarter mile from the present building. Under the old brick church there was a cave that provided many adventures for children through the years. Echos of Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatchter. The present building on Highway V was dedicated in August 1965 and today is nestled in a grove of shagbark hickory trees. The church has hosted a yearly meeting of the American Bible Society since 1852. These meetings are the 3rd Wednesday in August and starts with a covered dish supper at 6:00 pm followed by music and worship at 7:00 pm.
